The week before break is always one full of excitement and exhaustion.

We wish a huge farewell and lots of luck for the future to Helena who will be leaving 5A and returning to Germany after the break. She will be missed a great deal but we hope that she will stay in touch and let us know how life in Europe is going. Best of luck Helena!

We celebrated Thy’s birthday on Friday and many thanks to her for bringing in some delicious doughnuts that went well with our Home Alone marathon on the last day of the term.

UOI – Migration Museum Monologues Presentations

Firstly thank you to all the parents who came to listen and support students as they presented their Migration Story. Within the pandemonium of 84 students presenting, the following skills were observed and celebrated.

  • Courage – the ability to do something that frightens or extends oneself.
  • Communication – to express to an audience, using elements of expressive language and connected gestures to dispatch a message that engages the receiver.
  • Research – to take relevant bits of information from different sources and put it together in a format that makes sense.
  • Presentation – to adjust and vary communication methods to suit different audiences.

This week students completed an assessment to demonstrate how their multiplication and division skills have developed over the past few weeks. They reviewed these and have a clear understanding of their areas for development and extension. When we return in the new year we will begin to focus on fractions and geometry.

Narrative writing has come to an end, though we will continue to develop our storytelling skills after the break. We will also be starting a new focus on Explanation writing to partner with our Unit of Inquiry into Energy. This week, we finished our class read-aloud Front Desk and will be starting a new story on our return.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy, safe and restful holiday and I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year for more collaboration and learning.

Mr Charlie

Sweet Week 16!

Greetings 5A Community

This week in UOI, we’ve been super busy putting the finishing touches on our migration stories. We have placed a lot of emphasis on gestures, facial expressions, and emotions recently, with the aim of making our presentations rich and engaging for our audiences. I have been delighted with the energy and focus 5A has put into these monologues and we thoroughly look forward to showcasing our work at the Migration Museum on Wednesday 11th at 1pm – 2pm in the Library, to which you are all warmly invited.

In Maths this week, we spent time consolidating our division skills with a 3 Act Maths problem before considering rules of divisibility for numbers up to 6. We also focussed on using the CER model (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) which students have become familiar with and which they will use next week to complete a summative assessment task involving multiplication and division. Finally, we realised that Mr Charlie needs some help with his Mathematics when we saw some of his work, full of mistakes. I wonder if you can spot where he went wrong and how he could improve?

In literacy this week, we broke down two key narrative writing skills – when to change paragraphs and how to add detail through rich dialogue and description of what the speaker is doing, thinking and feeling. Students then continued to apply these newly found skills into their own writing.

Learner Profiles

As part of our Morning Circle time, we now focus each day on one of our Learner Profiles. This week, we focussed on the fact that we are Thinkers, Balanced, Principled, Caring and Open-minded. We watched a few videos and read some interesting quotations to prompt our thinking and then reflected at the end of each day on how we had exhibited features of each profile in a large or small manner. Here are just a couple of the videos that we watched and discussed.

Dinner Time Talk

  • What does TiPToP stand for?
  • What are the divisibility rules for 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6?
  • What do you think this quotation means?
