An invite to Open Classrooms 

Dear Parents, 

You are invited to share your child’s learning during open classrooms on Tuesday, November 19th.  Open classroom in 2A is being held in the following periods:

The green sessions are open to parents.

Math

After a number talk, your child will play a math game using addition, subtraction and number lines. They will also work on problems to show their knowledge of number strategies.

Reading

By using nonfiction text features, you will learn with your child about the area they plan to explore during this unit.

December 2: field trip to the botanical gardens. We will be leaving school at 8:30 and taking the buses back at 11:45 to be back in time for lunch.

We have had a great week working together in 2A. We were very focused and our 2A community worked extremely well together. I commend the students for their efforts throughout the week. Let’s have a great week next week. 

Library is Tuesday

UOI – We completed our Digital Citizen unit and will start our Explorers unit next week. We will be exploring the maker space twice next week.

Math – World problems, using benchmark numbers, number lines and lots of addition and subtraction math games.

English – Response writing, making connections when we read, finding suffixes, reading for fluency and different choices for independent reading.

  • On Thursday November 7th, the Elementary School will participate in international Outdoor Classroom Day.  To help make this day successful, please make sure that your child:

    -wears sunscreen to school
    -is dressed appropriately for the weather
    -has a hat

Dear Parents,

Thank you for all your support on UN Day. It was such a wonderful day to celebrate as a school community.

Some highlights from the week.

UOI – Learning to use Google Slides and comment appropriately.

Math – Answering math riddles and word problems, using number lines and gaining a greater understanding of using the benchmark number 10.

English – Learning how to writing a response, using description and compound sentences. Using prediction and connections when we read.

If a student wears sandals, crocs, or other inappropriate footwear, they will not be able to participate in the skateboarding activities. Students are allowed to bring their own skateboards, helmets, elbow pads, and knee pads for this unit.

SDG Week

  • October 21: UN Day. Please plan to join us for this amazing celebration…it is not to be missed!  Students are dismissed at 1:00 PM following the lunch. If you wish to take your child earlier than 1:00 PM please inform Ms. Ha or myself directly before leaving. Thank you in advance for all of your support with the food and clean up. We can’t do this without all of you.

This is a meeting for teacher, parent, and student to share strengths and areas for growth, some goals for the year, and ask questions.I look forward to seeing you all on Monday!

Curriculum

Literacy – This week we completed our final assessment for recount writing, continued to focus on our reading through literacy groups and inquired as word scientists.

Example of some of our word inquiries: I think “ful is a suffix” and “I think a word can have 2 bases”.

Our next genre for writing will be response writing.

Math – We have played math games, completed a 3 Act Math, used math talks and completed equations to display our knowledge of addition strategies.

Our  focus in math in the current unit is addition, subtraction and the relationship to place value.

UOI

We now understand that as digital citizens we have to be safe, responsible and respectful in the digital (online) world. We created digital superheroes and looked at using traffic lights to help us as digital citizens.

Moon Festival

Dear Parents,

This week, we launched our year-long unit into How We Express Ourselves by learning how and why the Vietnamese culture celebrates Tet Trung Thu (Moon Festival).  Next week we start a new unit of inquiry; please see below for information to support your child.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR CHILD

  • What do the people of Vietnam value and how do they show it during Moon Festival?

Digital Citizenship – An inquiry into “How We Organize Ourselves”.

The concepts below will be taught in class, however, it would be of great
assistance to help your child become familiar with the main unit components
and vocabulary in order to maximize their learning experiences and make
connections in class.
This is especially important for non mother-tongue English speaking students.
Please translate the following into your child’s mother tongue in order to
develop their linguistic abilities and foster their conceptual development. Any
extra reading, websites, movies or learning experiences you may give your
child in their mother tongue to compliment this unit, would be extremely
valuable.

community.

Typing at home    – Some parents have asked about optimal typing practice at home. Remember there is no expectation students need to be doing extra typing at home.
