29th November 2019 – WEEK B next week

Dear Parents,

The week before winter break (9-13th Dec) we will be reconnecting to our Festivals unit  (How We express Ourselves) by exploring festivals that are celebrated around the world at this time of year. To help your child explain any festivals that you celebrate I will be sending home a homework sheet on Monday so that you can fill it in with your child. Please return this sheet by the 9th December so we can use in class. 

If any parent would like to come and share a short explanation of a particular festival that is celebrated in the winter break please let me know and I can arrange a time in our morning (8.10 -8.30) or afternoon (3.10 -3.30) meeting times.

UPCOMING EVENTS

  • Monday December 2: Field trip to explore the botanical gardens.We will be leaving school at 8:30 and taking the bus back at 12:15 to be back in time for lunch.  Your child will need a snack, hat, water bottle, walking shoes and a light bag to carry these things in.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR CHILD

  • How do you use your “phoneme fingers” to sound out the word “looking”? Show me how you would spell it. 
  • How do you split 68, 38 and 27.
  • What is your favourite addition or subtraction strategy?
  • What things did you find on Google Earth? 
  • What is an information report? What is a “macro topic”? What is a “micro topic”? What are some ideas you put on your Brain Map?

Dear Parents,

Thank you for all your support this week.

It was great to see so many of you take the opportunity to join us in our open classroom sessions. Your children and I really appreciated your time and interest.

Thank you also for all your appreciation on Teacher Appreciation Day. I am truly humbled by all the thanks I received. It is my great pleasure to spend so much time with your children every day and I enjoy my work immensely.

  • Students have been using the websites Brainpop and Brainpop Jr this week to explore places on land, in water and in space. If your child would like to use these websites at home, they know the UNIS username and password. Students should turn on the CC (Closed Captioning) function, so that they can read along.

An invite to Open Classrooms 

Dear Parents, 

You are invited to share your child’s learning during open classrooms on Tuesday, November 19th.  Open classroom in 2A is being held in the following periods:

Math

After a number talk, your child will play a math game using addition, subtraction and number lines. They will also work on problems to show their knowledge of number strategies.

Reading

By using nonfiction text features, you will learn with your child about the area they plan to explore during this unit.

We have had a great week working together in 2A. We were very focused and our 2A community worked extremely well together. I commend the students for their efforts throughout the week. Let’s have a great week next week. 

Library is Tuesday

UOI – We completed our Digital Citizen unit and will start our Explorers unit next week. We will be exploring the maker space twice next week.

Math – World problems, using benchmark numbers, number lines and lots of addition and subtraction math games.

English – Response writing, making connections when we read, finding suffixes, reading for fluency and different choices for independent reading.

UPCOMING EVENTS

  • On Thursday November 7th, the Elementary School will participate in international Outdoor Classroom Day.  To help make this day successful, please make sure that your child:

    -wears sunscreen to school
    -is dressed appropriately for the weather
    -has a hat
    -has a full water bottle
