REMINDERS / INFORMATION

October 1 – November 1: All students must wear sport shoes for PE. If a student wears sandals, crocs, or other inappropriate footwear, they will not be able to participate in the skateboarding activities. Students are allowed to bring their own skateboards, helmets, elbow pads, and knee pads for this unit.

Curriculum

Literacy – This week we completed our final assessment for recount writing, continued to focus on our reading through literacy groups and inquired as word scientists.

Example of some of our word inquiries: I think “ful is a suffix” and “I think a word can have 2 bases”.

Our next genre for writing will be response writing.

Math – We have played math games, completed a 3 Act Math, used math talks and completed equations to display our knowledge of addition strategies.

Our  focus in math in the current unit is addition, subtraction and the relationship to place value.

UOI

We now understand that as digital citizens we have to be safe, responsible and respectful in the digital (online) world. We created digital superheroes and looked at using traffic lights to help us as digital citizens.

Moon Festival

Dear Parents,

This week, we launched our year-long unit into How We Express Ourselves by learning how and why the Vietnamese culture celebrates Tet Trung Thu (Moon Festival).  Next week we start a new unit of inquiry; please see below for information to support your child.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR CHILD

  • What does it mean to be “open-minded”?
  • What does it mean to be a “risk taker”?
  • What do the people of Vietnam value and how do they show it during Moon Festival?
  • How is Moon Festival similar to a festival from your culture?  How is it different?
  • What activities did you do during reading rotations this week?

Digital Citizenship – An inquiry into “How We Organize Ourselves”.

The concepts below will be taught in class, however, it would be of great
assistance to help your child become familiar with the main unit components
and vocabulary in order to maximize their learning experiences and make
connections in class.
This is especially important for non mother-tongue English speaking students.
Please translate the following into your child’s mother tongue in order to
develop their linguistic abilities and foster their conceptual development. Any
extra reading, websites, movies or learning experiences you may give your
child in their mother tongue to compliment this unit, would be extremely
valuable.

Central Idea: Choices that digital citizens make impact the global
community.

Inquiry into:
-Purposes and forms of digital technology
-Online responsibilities
-Ways to evaluate media

Vocabulary:
citizen, computer virus, digital, digital citizen, digital footprint, download, email,
internet, media, message, offline, online, private, technology, URL, website,
World
Wide Web (WWW)
