Grade 2/3 Adventure Challengers

The grade 2 and 3’s have recently finished their epic adventures in team-building and problem solving.

G2 managed to navigate their way around the ‘Island of the Monkey King’, working on their teamwork skills to negotiate all of the challenges. They successfully discovered and transported the skull of the monkey king and now have the ability to eat as many bananas as they want. They can also listen to each others ideas

G3 used their problem-solving skills to infiltrate a robot gang’s Bomb Factory and work their way up each level. They needed to utilize their problem-solving loop by Identifying the problem, creating ideas, choosing and experimenting with the ideas and then establish whether there were any new problems that arose. Of course, there were always new problems but they tackled each one with vigour and managed to save Hanoi from the gang, you can all feel safer tonight from their efforts.

Right now G2/3 are doing different versions of small ball games. Ask them about them and throw some balls around outside of school to practice everyones hand-eye coordination.

Happy New Year and Welcome Back!

Happy New Year and Welcome Back! We hope everyone had a wonderful December break wherever in the world you travelled. We hope your holiday was fun, full of laughter and exercise!

We would like to take this time to remind you of PE Uniforms. Below is a list of what your child needs to wear/bring to school on PE days.

PE Uniforms in Discovery, K1, K2 is:
UNIS PE shirt/ UNIS House Team Shirt
Shorts or pants (please do not send your child to school in a dress or skirt on PE days)
Reusable water bottle

All students in Discovery, K1, K2 participate in PE in their bare feet. They need to be able to remove their socks as well as their shoes. Please do not send your child to school wearing footed leggings or tights on PE days as this is a large safety concern.

PE Uniforms in Grades 1-5 is:
UNIS PE shirt/ UNIS House Team Shirt
UNIS PE shorts or pants
Reusable water bottle

All students in Grades 1- 5 need to wear appropriate footwear for PE. This means students should come to school in trainers/sneakers. As well we ask that you do not send your child to school wearing footed leggings or tights on PE days as there may be occasions we ask them to remove their socks and shoes.

We understand that the colder weather is upon us and students need to wear pants, sweaters and jackets. We simply ask that you layer your child’s PE Uniform underneath their warmer clothes. This allows them to remove clothing as they get hot in PE.

If you have any further concerns or questions please feel free to talk to your child(ren)’s PE teacher.

Skating update

After such a successful skateboard unit for G2, we are looking to introduce it into G4 and also encourage all students to give a it a go outside of school.

We have partnered with Hanoi’s original skate shop who will be stocking more and more junior boards and gear, including padding. Their quality is the important factor, particularly when safety is a concern.

Linh of LB’s Skateshop has been skating in Hanoi for years and is more than happy to offer help and guidance.

Grade 2 Skateboarding

The Grade 2’s are half way through their skateboarding unit and loving it – this is the first time UNIS has seen skateboards at school!
They have all learnt some very impressive tricks like the push and glide, mellow turn, sharp turn, stopping, tick tac, and manuals.

This week we put the skills we have been learning in the gym to test outside and as you can see from the video’s below we had a lot of success. We have realised that skateboarding is a great way to exercise and super fun!!!

There is a snapshot below of some of the lessons. Also…check out the easyblog for more videos.

Grade 2: Learning to create a game that is fun and fair

In our grade 2 classes, we have been learning about Invasion and Evasion games.  Our focus last week was sportsmanship and how that can affect a game negatively or positively.  This week we have been looking at the components of different games and how to make games FAIR and FUN!  See if your child can tell you the different components that make a game.  Ask your child what Invasion and Evasion games are their favourite.  Next week the students will have the chance to be creative and create their own games that are fair and fun.

UNIS House Phoenix Points

This year in Elementary PE we are trying out a new house points system. Students can earn Phoenix Points for their house when they demonstrate outstanding perseverance, respect, teamwork, sportsmanship, and organization in PE.

To start the competition we have focused on being organized for PE. This means students come to PE wearing their uniform and with a water bottle. If an entire house was able to do this, they won a point.

It’s been a tight competition so far. The standings as of Thursday were:
Buffalos- 18
Lions- 16
Eagles- 16
Tigers- 13

A huge shout out goes out to G1 this week who were the most organized grade level! They have shown how principled and organized they are. Students remembered to bring their water bottle and wear their PE uniform to classes this week. Way to to go G1!

Welcome back to PE

We would like to welcome everyone back to PE at UNIS elementary. We would also like to introduce you to our new ECC PE teacher, Miss Nikki Carey.

We have started the year with a burst of activity as all students have made PE agreements, learnt a whole raft of Active Starts (ask them about their favourite one) and have been screened for their Fundamental Movement Skills. See one of the Active Starts below.

The plan for the year can be seen below. Please print this off and stick it on your fridge so everyone knows what unit is coming up when? Download ESPE Unit Plan

Please ask your children what they are doing to be active and healthy in PE and school.

Yours in Health
