October 26th K1C

Dear parents,

We are learning to… be a scientist! This is our learning statement of the week. We reflect on a new picture every day showing the children exploring water using their senses. We are gaining the understanding that scientists observe things closely and record what they see, think and wonder.

This week the children did three observational drawings. White carnation flowers were placed in test tubes with plain water for the first day’s drawing. For the second day, food coloring was added to the water in the test tubes for children to draw/record what they saw and then they were asked what they think happened and what they wonder. On the third day, the white flowers changed to the same color as the colored water and on the fourth day, we recorded our experimental findings.

Next week for Show & Tell, please have your child bring in something to share that represents their home country/culture. This will help make connections to our UN celebration next Friday.

K1C is looking for volunteers! We would love for parents to come in to our classroom to share a story in their mother tongue. The children love visitors and stories, so it’s the perfect combination. Please email me if you are interested and we can set up a time. If you would like to join us more than once that is great too!

As you know, last week UNIS hosted the boys APAC volleyball tournament. K1 supported Brent International School of the Philippines. On Friday of last week, we attended a game to cheer the team on and asked if they would be interested in visiting our classrooms and playing with our kids. They said yes! The coaches brought the entire team down for the last period of the day. It was absolutely amazing how well the team did with our kids. They talked, they played, they laughed and had so much fun! It was yet another learning moment about what “community” truly means.

Lastly, Sebastian turned five this week! We shared a cake for his special day.

Please enjoy these pictures of our week.

Have a lovely weekend!

October 19th – K1C

Dear parents,

We have begun our new unit of inquiry into the transdisciplinary theme how the world works with the central idea: Water is a natural resource that can be explored. The children tuned into the unit by exploring our new science lab, playing in the water table and by going on a “water walk”.

This week we started Show & Tell. We discussed what it means to be a good speaker. We speak clearly and try to project our voice so others can hear. We also talked about being good and respectful listeners and what our bodies look like while doing this. The students were a bit nervous and excited to stand in front of their classmates to share, but they did a fantastic job! I was so proud of them! We are putting all of the photos in a “Holiday Book” that they can look at on a regular basis.

Next week for Show and Tell, please send in a tool to explore water.  For example: Container, spoon, funnel, tube, dropper… Be creative 🙂 We will use descriptive language to talk about the ‘tool.’

This morning we welcomed schools from all over Asia at the D-12 APAC volleyball school assembly. K1 adopted Brent International School from Manila. The children decorated flags with the Brent logo to carry and headbands with their Lions mascot to wear. We cheered loud and made them feel welcome. We also had the opportunity to get a picture with our adopted team. Tomorrow we will be attending a volleyball game to show our support and school spirit. So exciting!

Please enjoy these pictures of the week!

UNIS Hanoi is using Easyblog! We are currently using Easyblog portfolio to capture and reflect on your child’s learning, and we would like you to be able to view your child’s work in real time. Please click this K1C subscription link and follow the instructions to subscribe if you are a new parent at UNIS Hanoi, or if you are a returning parent but have not yet subscribed to your child’s portfolio. Once you subscribe, you will receive an email notification when your child adds a blog post. This is new for K1 this year, so please be patient as we get it up and going. Thank you!
If you are a teacher parent at UNIS, please use your personal email to subscribe to your child’s Easyblog account.

Reminders:

  • FRIDAY (tomorrow): The children are asked to wear blue to support UNIS at the APAC volleyball tournament!!
  • Please ensure your child has extra changes of clothes at school and replace when needed.

Have a lovely weekend!

Please read! October 5th – K1C

Dear parents,

I would like to thank all of you so much for attending Parent Teacher Conversations this week. It was wonderful to spend time talking with you and sharing in your child’s learning. K1C is a fantastic group of kids and I love coming to school greeted by smiling faces ready for the day.

This week, we repaired our K1C community web. The children noticed that if some individuals choose not to be responsible and care for our community, our web weakens. We need to work together to maintain a strong community. We revisited our classroom agreements and our community pictures they drew at the beginning of the Unit. The children have gained the understanding that our community is much larger than they originally thought, so we also added many more people.

On Monday, we took a field trip to Ms. Anissa’s office. The children took turns visiting her calming bowl, special relaxing chair and office.

This week the children were introduced to descriptive language. We started by describing our leader of the day. We have a special picture chart which helps the children with the descriptors. We use color, number, size and doing sentences so far. When we described Elena, here is what they said:

“Elena has a blue, white and red shirt.

She has ten toes.

She has long hair.

Elena likes to play in the loft.”

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The week following the holiday, we will be starting Show & Tell. Below is the schedule so you know what day your child needs to bring something to share. We will also be sending home a hard copy in backpacks today. Also, for the first week of Show & Tell we would like the children to share some pictures from their holiday. Please email these to me along with a description of where you were. Do not worry if you are staying here in Hanoi. Just send in pictures of some fun things you did during the week with your child.

Show & Tell Schedule

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Our next Unit begins shortly after the holiday. It is a new Unit all about water. We will be getting wet and dirty! PLEASE send in several sets of clothes for changing. Also, pay special attention to wet/dirty clothes that come home and then need to be replaced. Let your caregivers know this as well, so they can help to replace.

A UNIS recommended booklist has been added to the blog.  Please find it under the resource tab.

Lastly, please enjoy pictures of other things that your children have been engaged in. Highlights include, writing first and last names, friends’ names, representing dice patterns with dobbers, building tall towers, cooking, playing with our new sand in the sand pit and joining our Grade 3 Buddies in outdoor play.
