Sept 14

Dear Parents,

This week we continued our inquiry into the transdisciplinary theme who we are with the central idea:  Personal choices affect ourselves and the community. We focussed on the concept of friendship – what are the characteristics of friends?  Are you still friends when you’re upset with each other?  How can you be a good friend?  We read a number of storybooks about friendship; “Friend,” “Rex Wrecks It,” “My Friend Rabbit,” and “The Rainbow Fish” to help us explore these questions.  We read a story called “Chrysanthemum,” which prompted the students to begin exploring their names.  Chrysanthemum has 13 letters in her name! We counted and began comparing the number of letters in our own names.   We also learned a clapping pattern math game.  Thursday was a special day as the whole elementary school prepared to celebrate international Dot Day, inspired by the story “The Dot” by Peter Reynolds.  We reviewed the story with our Grade 3 buddies, helped make our mark on the school fence, and created a collaborative “dotty” collage.  Students may wear dots to school tomorrow to help celebrate, if they’d like.  How do you make your mark on the world?  Please see this link for photos from this week:  K1B Photos

Please see the presentation slideshow if you were unable to attend Back to School Night last week. K1B Back to School

Please note:

*students are encouraged to wear clothes with dots to school tomorrow (Friday).  We will make dots in class to wear (so please don’t worry if you don’t have clothes already)

*UNIS will kick off its 30th birthday celebration on Tuesday (19th) with a whole school photo and birthday party.  All students should wear blue to school on Tuesday – blue PE shirts or other blue clothes are ok
