Enjoy the Performing Arts Virtual Showcase!

Students in MYP Band, Orchestra and Choir pulled together a Performing Arts Showcase that can now be viewed online.

Individual student performances have been uploaded onto Youtube and showcased on a googlesite. Grade level playlists exist so that viewers can easily find a student’s piece.

The assignment set were as follows:

Grad 6 Band and Orchestra – This group of students was tasked to play a composition that they have written themselves.

Grades 6-8 Choir, Grades 7 & 8 Band and Grade 7 & 8 Orchestra – This group of students was tasked to work with the same melody and adapt expressive markings to fit their interpretation of a theme.

Grades 9 & 10 Band, Choir & Orchestra – This group of students was tasked to play compositions they created through exploring specific compositional devices and genres.

Virtual Spring Celebration Announcement

On behalf of the MYP musicians from our G6-10 Band, Choir and Orchestra programmes, we are excited to share with you the creative work they have been busy producing this quarter. Throughout the distance learning journey and beyond, the students have been busy both creating and interpreting  expressive compositions that we cannot wait to share via a Virtual Spring Celebration! Your music student will receive a google form over the next 24 hours that they will use to add their final video recordings to the playlist.

Our Virtual Spring Celebration will go live on June 3rd.

MYP Assessment – Determining End of Year Grades during Distance Learning

All MYP courses at UNIS Hanoi are year long courses, this means that teachers consider evidence from Semester 1 and 2 when making judgments on end of year criterion grades.  At the end of the school year, each MYP subject determines students’ final criterion grades and these are then calculated into a final grade from 1-7 using the published MYP grade boundaries- see table below under Additional Information.

Covid-19 school closure has changed our approach to assessment in Semester 2.  Firstly, the IB has officially made some adjustments to their assessment requirements by reducing the number of times each criterion is required to be assessed. This means that UNIS Hanoi MYP Teachers have redesigned their unit assessments, from summatively (end of unit of study, culminating assessment task) to smaller, more frequent tasks that systemically target the no more than two criterion per task. 

Students’ will receive end of year grades which will be determined by evidence recorded from Semester 1, which supplements the collection of real and specific evidence of each criteria during distance learning in Semester 2.

The upcoming Parent, student, teacher conferences in the middle and high schools are  a great opportunity to discuss how your child is engaging with distance learning and identify any criteria that requires further evidence.

UNIS Hanoi MYP Teachers  recognise the challenges associated with distance learning and award criterion grades based on what students have done, and not on what they haven’t done.

The Personal Project Exhibition – The Journey Goes Online

After a 10 month journey, students in Grade 10 have successfully completed their Personal Projects and are ready to showcase the results of their hard work at the annual Personal Project Exhibition.

Each student has created a short video describing their project, discussing their process and the product they created. These videos will be uploaded to a specially dedicated YouTube channel on Wednesday, April 22 to give the entire UNIS Hanoi community the opportunity to view the students’ work and celebrate their successes with them.

The diversity of the Projects mirrors the diverse interests and passions of our student body. Our students wrote novels, created music, and directed documentary films about the world around them; designed service projects to help their communities become healthier and more sustainable; build furniture and shoes our of recycled materials; each project is unique like each of our students.

UNIS Hanoi’s Personal Project Coordinator, Griffin Loynes, applauded the remarkable efforts of the students and their ability to complete the journey in the current climate.

He added, “On behalf of the students, I’d like to welcome the entire community to their exhibition. Please check out our YouTube channel beginning on Wednesday, April 22 to peruse the great array of diverse projects that have been produced and listen to what our students say about their work.  Please consider adding comments to the students’ video, providing positive feedback to our students, praising the passion, dedication, and learning that went into each Project.”

The link to the Personal Project Exhibition Channel will also be emailed to all Grade 10 parents and students.

2020-21 Schedule Update: Math and Language Course Information for High School

In the coming weeks, current Maths and Language teachers will be talking with students about placements for next year. Placements in these MYP courses are based on teacher recommendations. If you have questions about Math or Language please contact your child counsellor or their Math and Language teacher directly.

Language Placements

“MYP language acquisition is a compulsory component of the MYP in every year of the programme. It is a requirement that schools provide sustained language learning in at least two languages for each year of the MYP.” IBO

Once a UNIS Hanoi student has commenced a Language pathway (second language acquisition Language B or an additional Language A .e.g. Korean) the student should remain in that pathway throughout the MYP. Each student’s current teacher will make a recommendation for placement for the following year based on evidence of their language proficiency.

Mathematics Recommendations 

Recommendations are holistic and based on evidence of learning that a student has demonstrated in assessments and in class, as well as in approaches to learning. There are two courses of Mathematics taught in the High School:

“Standard mathematics, which aims to give all students a sound knowledge of basic mathematical principles while allowing them to develop the skills needed to meet the objectives of MYP mathematics

Extended mathematics, in which the standard mathematics framework supplemented by additional topics and skills, providing greater breadth and depth” (IBO, Mathematics).

Semester 2 MSHS Arts Exhibition

Quench your imagination at the Semester 2 MSHS Arts Exhibition in the Centre for the Arts Foyer from 6-17 May.

Grade 6 worked on sewing skills and soft sculptures of food inspired by the artists, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, who have turned everyday objects as public art. As a start, students learned and practiced a few different sewing techniques while making their own draw-string bag. Students have decorated it with different kinds of stitches and sewing on of buttons. Students have made soft sculptures of food, the first one to be given to the babies in the local orphanages. Students learned briefly about the significance of physical touch to the babies. The soft sculptures are our ways of somehow giving them comfort and physical touch they need.

Grade 7 investigated portraiture through the lens of personal identity.  Researching the works of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and African American artist Kehinde Wiley, students created two self portraits. One line continuous contour self portraits were created using the ProCreate app on iPad and then vectored in Adobe Illustrator for laser cutting. Pencil drawn portraits appropriated poses based on historical artworks. Both of these challenging tasks asked students to explore their personal identity and in turn learn more about the world around them.

Grade 8 artists have been focusing on a subject we can all agree on: food. In this exhibition, we collaborated with Donkey Bakery, using their donuts as live models for our introduction to ceramic sculpture. Artists then went on to design and sculpt a food-themed sculpture and created this sculpture in three forms: ceramic sculpture, miniature felt sculpture and as a felt painting. Also on display from Grade 8 artists are some collaborative digital paintings. Students spent time creating a collaborative drawing (working on one drawing together with a partner) and then individually digitally edited the drawing. When viewing these images see if you can recognise the location of the subject matter.

Grade 9 artist created vibrant still life painting utilising objects of personal significance in a domestic settings.

Grade 10 artists were asked to create an artwork that captures a sense of place. They created a painting of Hanoi in response to a field trip to the old quarter.

Parent Series: Applying the MYP

All grade 6 – 10 parents are invited to attend the Middle Years Programme (MYP) parent session- part 2 focusing on ‘Applying the MYP’. The session will begin at 8.30 in the Community Room (B7). Please register here
Applying the MYP is a hands-on workshop where parents will be engaged in activities to acquire a deeper understanding of how the MYP works in practice!
  1. How do students engage with assessment rubrics?
  2. Example of developing conceptual understanding.
  3. The explicit teaching of ATL skills
  4. Spend a short time in 2 different MYP classrooms then debrief what we see.

If you were unable to attend the part 1 session – ‘What is the MYP’ – which gives you basic understanding of the MYP concepts, please make sure to register for the next one coming up on January 22. The part 2 – Appyling the MYP will also be repeated on January 29.
