Thinking about our Approaches to Learning (ATL’s)

This week K2C were thinking more about their social skills, self management skills, thinking skills and communication skills. In ‘PYP’ speak- these skills are known as the ATL’s. (Approaches to learning). After working in teams to do these puzzles, we noticed how much our cooperation skill shave improved since the beginning of the year.

Sadly, we had to say farewell to Oscar yesterday. We wish him and his family all the best in South Korea.

How We Express Ourselves

A very BIG thank you to three families who were risk-takers this week and shared an example of “How They Express Themselves”! We had a Gummy Bear Zumba dance, an instrumental music performance Die Forelle by Schubert, Jurassic Park, with Vietnamese flute and Trung (Vietnamese bamboo instrument) and an origami demonstration.

If you and your child would like to express yourself in a creative, special 2-3 minute performance.. Please sign up here..

How many days do we have left in K2C? How can we find out?

This wondering led K2C to learn about ways we can measure time using calendars.

At home you might like to use a calendar and practise using it to count   days, and talk about upcoming special events!

This week’s Mystery Reader was Hans’ grandmother and K2C enjoyed listening to her funny French tale about a duck!

Of course the highlight this week was the K2 and Grade 1 Music Concert and Art Exhibition. I imagine you are very proud parents.

Did you know today UNIS celebrated Outdoor Classroom Day !

  • spending time outdoors is as important for children’s development as learning to read and write.
  • learning outside of the classroom engages and excites children in spectacular ways.
  • outdoor play is the key to improving children’s health, wellbeing and happiness.
  • outdoor play is not a ‘nice to have’, it is essential for children’s development

When teachers take learning outdoors they report some powerful impacts: Children’s behaviour improves, whole classes are excited to learn, and individuals who feel inhibited by the curriculum often thrive in an outdoor environment. When adults think back to their own happiest memories of childhood, they frequently recall the joy of playing outdoors. Play is not only central to children’s enjoyment of childhood, but teaches critical life skills such as problem-solving, teamwork and creativity.

10 May

It is so hard to believe that it is May already and we have just one more month left of the school year. At the moment, I am busy assessing student learning in reading, writing and mathematics, and it makes me feel so proud to see evidence of each child’s amazing progress. Each child has improved SO MUCH ! They are all definitely ready for Grade 1.
Eric Carle has written so many wonderful children’s books. Ask your child to retell the story of The Grouchy Ladybug and I See A Song.

Thank you to Eimar’s Mum, Colette, for being this week’s mystery reader. Your children were wonderful listeners considering it was in Gaelic, an Irish language!

Sadly, it’s time for us to start thinking about the end of the year and and the people who will be leaving UNIS. In order to leave well we must communicate our thoughts to the people that we connected with here in Hanoi. With the help of our kind and caring counselor, our “leavers’ have commenced Student Transition Counseling Programme. ( After 33 years of teaching,Toby Bear and I, have decided to take a ‘Gap Year’ next year and will spend time at home  in Australia with family.)
