Week 2 in 4B

Week 2 in 4B  – School Photos Tuesday 27 August

4B had another amazing week of learning. We spent a considerable amount of time investigating the type of learning environment that we want to create this year. On Monday, the children completed a “bus stop” activity to record their ideas about things that would help them be successful learners in the year ahead. After recording their ideas we categorized them into one of three areas: Student, Teacher or Environment.

We then completed a “Pair Share” activity to create our Essential Agreements:

04B Essential Agreements

  • We agree to use inside voices.
  • We agree to listen to each other and take turns.
  • We agree to respect each other by being kind, caring and inclusive.
  • We agree to be open-minded.
  • We agree to try our best and never give up.
  • We agree to be focused.

Ms Angela Visits  4B

On Monday Ms Angela, our new Literacy coach visited 4B. She read an excellent book about words called  “The Word Collector”and did a Structured Word Inquiry activity with the students.

SWI is about understanding larger patterns across words, i.e., shared roots/bases/families, as much as understanding the evolution and structure of one word. Students learn investigative tools to understand new vocabulary, and so they can apply SWI across every discipline. When students use roots or a word’s structure to understand new vocabulary in a content area such as math or history, they are applying their SWI understanding, exposure, and skillset.

Makerspace

On Tuesday we visited the UNIS Makerspace and Mr Neal. We had an amazing time completing a challenge task using cups.

Maths

Over the coming weeks the students will be involved in a Maths  Inquiry with the big idea:

Each and every one of us is a mathematician.

Central Idea: There are ways that mathematicians think and share ideas.

Lines of Inquiry:

There are eight mathematical practices.

We will have certain routines in our class when we think about mathematics.

Our classroom is a mathematical community.

Sharing our thinking helps our learning.

Week 1 in 4B

Week one in 4B

Welcome to 4B. My name is David Logue and I look forward to teaching your child this year.
My school contact details are dlogue@unishanoi.org

It has been wonderful getting to know all the boys and girls in 4B this week. We have spent a considerable amount of time establishing a sense of class community.

On the first day of school we shared holiday stories, interviewed other members of the class and completed a number of Math challenges working in pairs. It was wonderful to see the students working together in such an open minded manner. The returning students made the new class members instantly feel a part of the UNIS community.

On Thursday we completed a PMI (pluses, minuses and interesting things chart) to record our feelings about Day 1. We then worked in teams to complete a number of word and maths problems.

We also created a personal “portrait” to represent our individual characteristics.  It was great fun leaning about each other in this visual form. Hopefully ours will turn out similar to the ones below.

Today we were excited to participate in our first PE lesson with Mr Matt. We have also enjoyed our specialist lessons in World Languages and Art. In the morning session 4B had fun working in Mr Darren’s class as part of our “getting to know each other” activities. Next week we are looking forward to completing  a Scavenger Hunt using iPads to locate various places around the school.

HEADPHONES

ALL 4B students need a pair of headphones that they can keep at school for use with the Chromebooks and Ipads. Please send them in as soon as possible.
