Farewell 4C

It has been a fantastic and memorable year in 4C.  Parents, thank you for all of your support. Students, you have come so far this year. I am proud of each of you.  You will be missed.  Keep up the good work in Grade 5 and come back to visit anytime.  Have a wonderful summer.  Here is the poem we created together about our year.

We are From 4C

We are from the swish of the flag marching towards the food

From sweating and hot humid air

From the drops of silence when the corn lands

From Ms. Thao’s art gallery to the treks of geologist

We are from the stinky smell of the lunch box to our stinky feet after PE

From rainbow lemonade to a robot maze

from SDG’s to little alchemy

We are from hugging legs to fidget spinner mania

From “Don’t give up” to “Music is fractions deal with it”

We are from shots of paper in the bin to the scraps of paper on the floor

But we celebrate anyways

Learning about Fractions through Music

“In Math we learned that music notes are the same thing as fractions. So we learned how to add  music fractions up to make a whole.

Then we could make our own song, get one from the internet or use one Ms. Mindy had for us and we had to write the fractions for the song.  Then we changed the fractions into decimals and put it into scratch to hear our song.” – Felix

“Our class made a video  to show how sounds add up to a whole.  In our video Eulalia and Hai Nam were making a whole note. Ha Chi and Hedvig’s table were making a half note. My table was making fourth notes, another table made eighth notes  and another made sixteenth notes. We were learning math through music because everything that you see is almost Math, like when you read a clock or when you cook. So technically we were making fractions from music.”  – Talya

Preparing for Market Day


“In 4C we have been preparing for Market Day, an event for 4th grade in their marketing unit.  Where we learn to be entrepreneurs.  We choose a business or service to sell to the other grades.  We have to think about what forces will affect our business such as supply and demand, location and weather. We use a loan from our teachers that we use to pay for everything in our business and we have to pay it back at the end.  We have to try our best to make a profit.” -Lucas

“In writing time we have been writing information reports.  After we learned how to write an information report we got to choose what we wanted to write our own report on.   First I took a bunch of notes, then I learned how to organize my notes into a macro group and micro groups.  I chose to research wolves.  So my macro group was ‘Wolves are a type of animal that are similar to dogs.’  My micro groups were ‘Where do wolves live? What do wolves eat? Why do wolves howl and why are wolves endangered?’  I liked doing this because I liked choosing what I wanted to learn about and I liked looking up all that information.” -Hedvig

“In Math we have been learning about fractions and decimals.  We are learning about different things in our Math rotations.  I am in a group that has been learning about improper fractions and how to convert them to mixed numbers.  I am also learning about converting fractions to decimals.  I did this though different games that Ms. Thao sent us and through these 100 charts that help us convert fractions into decimals and through different story problems that I have to solve using what I know about fractions and decimals.  Other groups are learning about different things like how to order fractions and equivalent fractions.” -Jojo

Heritage Field Trips – in person and through virtual reality

Unit of Inquiry central idea: Heritage is out legacy from the past, what we live with today and pass on to future generations.

Last week students split into groups to visit 6 different potential world heritage sites in Hanoi.  During the field trip they took notes and collected evidence for why the site should be a world heritage site.  This week they are turning their notes into a persuasive paper.

This week we also used virtual reality boxes to go on a virtual field trip to world heritage sites around the world.  Students visited places such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Amazon and Machu Picchu. They then worked with their K2 buddies to describe the place they visited and then decide which UNESCO criteria it qualifies in.  It was a wonderful way to explore heritage.


Looking back and looking forward


In Math the students have been setting their own weekly Math goals based on results from measurement and data assessments and then during rotations they work to accomplish their goals.  The students have been very successful in accomplishing their goals. See their student blogs for examples of what they have done.

Next week we will move into studying multiplication and number patterns.


The students wrote stories  based on one of Ms. Thao’s paintings.  The grammar focus for the week has been when to put in paragraphs in narrative writing.

Next week we will be studying how to write to persuade.


The students have been studying about how their body systems are affected by their choices. Each student chose one thing they wanted to improve such as their strength or memory and they worked to improve that.  They then created graphs with their data and prepared presentations that each student gave in front of the class. New Unit

“Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today and pass on to future generations.” -UNESCO
During this unit, we will be asking students to look at their family’s heritage and think about what they have from the past generations that will be passed to the future.  This can be artifacts, stories, traditions, etc.
We will also be looking at cultural heritage and UNESCO World Heritage sites. Why are some things preserved and passed on to future generations while other things change with the times?
During the holiday, we’re asking students to think about heritage and what they notice around them. This is a great time to reflect on Vietnamese traditions, as well as their own culture’s. If they can take pictures to bring in, please do!
If you have the chance, please talk about heritage to your children during the holiday…..perhaps find pictures or examples! We’d love to have some examples of heritage when we return.


Our students have been learning how to code in order to create animations for their “Story of the Rock” projects.   This week they used their coding expertise to lead their K2 buddies in a coding session.  They were excellent teachers.  Thank you to Ms. Kathy for the video.

New UOI: Our body systems are affected by our choices

Two weeks ago we started our new Unit of Inquiry.

The Central Idea is: Our body systems are affected by our choices.

The lines of inquiry are:

What are the different body systems?

How do the different body systems work?

What affect do our choices have on the different body systems?


In this unit the students will be focusing on the skills of asking a question, observing, gathering data, organizing data and analyzing  the data then presenting their findings.  They will practice these skills both in Math lessons and in UOI lessons.

During reading time they will focus on the research skills of identifying important information and summarizing.

What we have been up to in 4C


This week we began our new unit. Inquiring into how the choices we make affect our bodies.

As a beginning to our unit many parents participated in an egg drop challenge, reflecting on how the body protects its vital organs and then designing a structure that would protect an egg.


Our class has been learning how to be good writers.  The focus for the first part of the year was how to write with good ideas and how to organize your writing.  Recently we have begun to focus on using effective word choice.

The students are all writing narrative stories. In the stories they demonstrate their understanding of our geology unit by describing the story of a rock.  Before each writing session we have a mini lesson on one aspect of word choice. Students then focus on including that in their rock stories. Below is an example of one of our word choice lessons this week.

Math: In addition to whole class learning engagements, 4C has four sessions a week of Math rotations.

Many of you had the chance to see the way that Math rotations work in 4C.   Rotations are broken up into 4 parts.

Number: The students will continue to develop number fluency throughout the year.  They will do this through choosing number games that fit their learning targets. At the moment students are working on building fluency with addition and subtraction. They will also continue to develop number fluency through whole class activities such as number talks.

Technology: Students will use technology to practice the skills learned in class. At the moment they are using Google Sketchup to build a classroom model.  They are using the skill of attending to precision.

Teacher Small Groups: I work with the students in small groups to either reinforce a concept they need extra support in or to introduce them to a new concept. This week I worked with groups on how to use what they know to figure out what they don’t know. How to find the missing measurement of a shape.

Problem Solving:  The students work on differentiated problems to practice their problem solving skills.
