Unit of Inquiry

This week we continue our unit of inquiry into the transdisciplinary theme how the world works with the central idea: Understanding living things helps us share our environment and resources. The children began to research an animal they are interested in. They decided to use the internet, books and brainPop to help them learn more about their animal. We went to the library and searched for books to help us with our research. The children have researched the habitat, what the animal eats and the life cycle of the animal.

We have also been talking about wasting and not caring for classroom resources. The children have been watching how resources have been taken away from other classes in K1 because the children aren’t taking care of them. K1A has been working very hard to ensure they don’t lose any resources and are doing extremely well at caring for everything in the classroom. This will later be linked back to how we need to take care of the habitats of animals for them to survive.

Graduation and Early Release Tomorrow

Today, the Elementary School cheered on the graduating class of 2018. We made signs with our buddies and participate in the Grand Walk. Tomorrow, the children will be finished school at 11:30am. There will be no lunch serviced.

Swimming-Change of Dates

Due to the K1 dress rehearsal, K1A will swim on Monday and Thursday for next week only!! Please send in swimming kit on Wednesday and Thursday, NOT Monday.

Here are some photos of the week.

Have a great weekend and stay cool,

Dear Parents,
Last week, the children enjoyed Book Week. We wore words, come dressed as a favourite book character and ended the week in our pyjamas.
This week, we have been working on patterning. We have been finding patterns in our environment. The children have been copying, extending and creating their own patterns.
Nikhil’s dad, Sujoy, came to share photos of bugs and critters that he and his friends had taken photos of in different areas of India. The children asked questions and were very interested in seeing all the different creatures.
The children have been busy finding cicada skins and collecting bugs in our ECC gardens. They have been observing closely and comparing the different features of the bugs. We have been discussing how we need to be responsible and care for their habitats. Some children have been trying to create safe areas and house for the baby frogs in our back are.
Swimming: NEXT WEEK
Starting on Monday May 14th  all students in Discovery, K1, K2, and Grade 1 will be swimming during their PE lessons. Swimming will continue until the end of the school year.

  • goggles
  • swim cap (if hair is below shoulders)

K2 Market Day

The K2 children have been learning about goods and services as part of their How We Organize Ourselves unit of inquiry.  As a culminating project, they will be hosting an ECC Market on Tuesday, 15 May.  Children will be selling goods they have made themselves, including crafts, books and beverages.

Please send 20,000 VND to school with your child on Tuesday so s/he can enjoy shopping at the K2 market.

All of the money earned will be donated to LifeStraw, an organization that helps provide access to clean water.  Along with donations from other ES classes, we are hoping to be able to purchase a community water filter for a local school.  This would reduce the number of plastic bottles that community consumes while also providing clean drinking water.

If you have questions, please contact Ms Andrea in K2:  asnyder@unishanoi.org

Here are some photos from the past two weeks in K1A.

Have a great weekend,

Unit of Inquiry
This week we continue our unit of inquiry into the transdisciplinary theme how the world works with the central idea: Understanding living things helps us share our environment and resources. Each child has decided on a  living thing that they will be researching. They will find children who are interested in the same or similar animal and will do a mini research project.

Thank you to Thomas and his family!

Thomas and his family went to Banana island and found us caterpillars. They were rolled in banana leaves and we were lucky enough to watch them turn into moths. The children believe that it was a moth because it had a furry body and the wings were open when it rested.

STILL NEED YOUR HELP: To help support our unit we are looking for tadpoles and caterpillars to keep in the classroom. If you find any or know where we can get some, can you please bring them to school of let me know. Thank you.

From May 2-4, we will have Book Week.
Wednesday May 2– ‘Wear a Word’ day- children will choose their favourite word, write it out and put it somewhere on their body. There will be reading and word conversations all day!

Unit of Inquiry
This week we continue our unit of inquiry into the transdisciplinary theme how the world works with the central idea: Understanding living things helps us share our environment and resources.  The children thought about living things they might find at UNIS. They did paintings and we will continue to explore the local environment to see what we can find. We did a survey about what animals the children have at home. There seem to be a lot of cat owners in K1A. The children continue to engage in creative play in the vet and the bug corners. They are asking many questions and have many wonderings.
STILL NEED YOUR HELP: To help support our unit we are looking for tadpoles and caterpillars to keep in the classroom. If you find any or know where we can get some, can you please bring them to school of let me know. Thank you.

Dear Parents,
I hope you had a lovely break.
Unit of Inquiry
This week we continued our unit of inquiry into the transdisciplinary theme how we express ourselves with the central idea: Storytelling allows us to share ideas, feelings and experiences. We have begun to inquiry into the line “communicating personal stories.” The children are sharing stories from their holiday. We are taking turns to talk about our holidays in small groups. The children will be blogging about their holiday.

We have also begun to make puppets. The children are currently deciding on what character their puppet will be. If you have any extra fabric at home and would be willing for us to use it, could you please send it to school? The children will be sewing and gluing fabric on their puppets.

Hats

I have noticed many children are not coming to school with a sun hat. Can you please make sure that your child has a sun hat everyday? If your child doesn’t bring a hat, they will be asked to play in the undercover areas of the playground.

Reminders:

There is no school for ES students on March 12th.

Here are some photos.
