Introducing the new SCO UES Rep

The UNIS School Community Organisation (SCO) is extremely happy to announce that Sheila Schlager will join the SCO Executive Committee in the position of Upper Elementary School (UES) Representative. Welcome Sheila!

 About Sheila
“This is our second year at UNIS and in Hanoi. My children are Levin in Grade 2C, Ophelia in Grade 6 and Noah in Grade 9. We are from Germany, and as a family, Vietnam is our fourth country of residence. I am a cross-cultural management consultant and counselor, currently establishing myself as a freelancer. My husband Patric works in climate change adaptation advisory. We enjoy being outdoors, kayaking or hiking, making and listening to music, reading and exploring the culture of each country we settle in.”

To contact Sheila please email sco_ues@unishanoi.org

Stay in Touch via WhatsApp

With the aim of fostering positive connections within our UNIS Hanoi Parent/Guardian Community the SCO would like to encourage parents/guardians to engage with each other via “WhatsApp”. Grade Level and Class Parents have assisted the SCO Executive in establishing WhatsApp groups for each grade in our Secondary School and class in the Elementary School. Of course our e-newsletter, the Tin Tuc, remains the key destination for all updated UNIS Hanoi news, but we hope WhatsApp will be used widely to provide specific reminders, reinforce important dates and information as well as being a conduit to other parents in your child’s class/grade. Most parents should have received an email from the SCO introducing your parent contact, and containing links to join your class/year WhatsApp group (remember to download “WhatsApp” first). We hope that you will decide to join the relevant groups for your children.

If you need to have your link resent please contact your SCO representatives, who will redirect your enquiry :

Lower Elementary School (Discovery- Grade1):  Haruko Dwyer  sco_les@unishanoi.org

Middle School (Grade 6 -8): Garry Riechert sco_ms@unishanoi.org

DESPERATELY SEEKING AN UPPER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (UES) PARENT REPRESENTATIVE & ES CLASS PARENTS (GRADES K1C, 1A-D, 2B-D, 3A-D, 4B, 5A, 5B, 5D)
The SCO (UNIS Hanoi’s parent volunteer organization) is looking for an Upper Elementary School (UES) parent representative for SY2020-2021. The UES rep is a position on the SCO Executive along with the Communications Officer (Susan), Treasurer (Poul), LES rep (Haruko), MS rep (Garry) and HS rep (Pippa). This person will work most closely with Haruko to support and coordinate parents across the Elementary School with the UES rep focusing on Grades 2-5. It’s a great way to get involved in the UNIS community. This position is open to NEW and RETURNING UES parents. No experience necessary, just a positive attitude and a willingness to meet other parents!
ALSO, we need ES Class Parents for the following Grades: K1C, 1A-D, 2B-D, 3A-D, 4B, 5A, 5B, 5D. If you have a child in these classes, we need a few more Class Parents to help coordinate parents for activities that the teachers may need help with – for example, the teacher may ask the Class Parent to help recruit volunteers to accompany kids on a field trip, or organize an end of the year party. Being a class parent is a great and fun way to get involved with the school, support your child’s teacher and connect with other parents in your child’s class.
If you’re interested in any of these roles, have any questions, and want to know more, please email sco@unishanoi.org. Thank you for considering volunteering your time this year!

Introducing the Neurodiverse Families Support Group

In SY2020-2021, the SCO has launched a new parent support group for families with neurodivergent kids. Examples of neurodivergence include: Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism, Dystaxia & Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), sensory processing, executive function, self-regulation and social communication issues.

This support group was envisioned by two UNIS Hanoi parents, Sarah Garner and Hieu Nguyen, who have been connecting with other interested parents over the last two years. The SCO is happy to help promote and facilitate connections among parents. With the support of the school, this group will also be able to take advantage of existing expertise and resources within UNIS.

Any parent of a child with learning or thinking differences is welcome to participate; your child does not need a diagnosis for you to join the group. The plan is that starting in September 2020, the group will hold monthly meetings designed for parents to connect, provide each other with support, exchange ideas, knowledge and stories. If you can’t attend in person, useful information will be available on the Veracross Parent Portal.

Stay tuned for more information about the group and details about the date, time and location for the group’s kick-off meeting in September 2020. For any questions, please contact: SCONeurodiverseFamilies@unishanoi.org.

For parents interested in creating their own support group around a topic, interest or issue, please see these SCO Parent Support Group Guidelines.

Welcome from your SCO Parent Reps!

The SCO Executive Committee is a group of parent volunteers whose mission is to help “enhance and foster partnerships throughout the school community in support of the UNIS Hanoi’s Mission and Vision”. We do this mainly by organising and supporting community-building activities and events and by bridging connections among parents, administration and faculty across different parts of the school.

The SCO Executive Committee members for SY2020-2021 are:

Susan Perez: Communications – sco@unishanoi.org

These include the Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese Communities, Used Book Sale, Sparkly Social, Spring Fair, Swim Club, ES Snack Sale, Phoenix Boosters, Neurodiverse Families Support Group, and Grade 12 Parents.

We encourage you all to join the UNIS Hanoi Parent Facebook groups. These groups were created by UNIS Hanoi parents in partnership with the School and serve as helpful tools for parents to stay connected, share information and parenting resources and stay updated on events. To join you will be asked to answer a few questions. Please make sure that you answer the questions to confirm that you are a UNIS Hanoi parent.

UNIS Hanoi ES Parents (Discovery – Grade 5)

UNIS Hanoi MSHS Parents (Grades 6-12)

Also, please note the information shared by the School about publishing your contact email on the Parent Portal Household Directory:

Please use this QUICK GUIDE for detailed information on how to update your Household Profile. By publishing your contact information to the parent community in our password protected portal directory you are opening up a world of connectivity within our UNIS Hanoi community; Our School Community Organisation (SCO) can send you invites and updates, parents of your child’s friends can find you, and it makes organising playdates or zoomdates (!) a lot easier! It’s designed as a resource for you!

More information will come your way soon about ways to connect within your division, class and/or Grade, so please make sure your contact information is published in the Household Profile on Veracross so that we can reach out to you. Please feel free to reach out to us anytime and with any questions. We are here to support you!

With our best wishes for a fabulous SY2020-2021,

Susan, Poul, Pippa, Garry and Haruko
