August 27-31

This Week in 4D:

Math: This week students persevered in solving complex problems as they attempted several Math challenges.  They also began the classroom routine of Number Talks. Please see their Seesaw for an explanation on this.

Literacy: Students wrote friendly letters to their Peace Crane partners in South Africa.  Peace crane letters is an initiative where students from all around the world write to each other. It is a way to promote understanding and open mindedness.

UOI: The students looked at our yearlong unit How we express ourselves. The central idea is: How we express our understanding influences how effectively our messages are communicated.  We will be working throughout the year to help students learn how to create high quality presentations through a variety of media.

Website of the week: https://www.mangahigh.com/en/

Mangaghigh will be used to practice Math concepts that students have been taught. Students have logged in at school and practiced it a bit this week.  It will not be used every week at school but occasionally I will assign tasks on Mangahigh. Some of the tasks are answering a set of questions and other tasks are more game like. I will not assign homework on Mangahigh but it could be a site you let child use at home if you wish.

Game of the Week: Close to 100

Game Purpose: To improve addition and subtraction fluency to 100.  The game can be adjusted to play to 1,000 if the student is fluent to 100 already.

Week 2 in 4D

It has been another great week in 4D.  The students are beginning to understand our routines and expectations.  This week they started their new digital portfolio using the Seesaw platform. They are learning how to Seesaw  properly as well as how to handle their new Chromebooks properly.  We will be sharing their Seesaw accounts with you soon so that you can be up to date with their learning. Here are some pictures of our week and then some reminders.

Beginning their new digital portfolios.

Our Week in Review:

Math: Students learned about and then practiced important math concepts such as.

One groups work on the challenge, “Can you find every number from 1-20 using any operation but only the number 4.

Using clues to solve the challenge. “Can you build the shape that fits all of these clues?”

  • Being good at math isn’t about being fast rather its about thinking deeply.
  • Mistakes are opportunities to learn
  • Mathematics is about finding and making sense of patterns.

Literacy: Students are working on developing reading and writing routines. They have developed the routine of getting started right away, working the whole time and working quietly.  They practiced reading comprehension concepts of visualizing and asking questions.

Working on their narrative stories.

Unit of Inquiry:  Students are  working on goal setting and reflecting skills. They have begun to create posters to explain the IB learner Profile and identify how they show that they have those traits.
