Dear Parents,

This week we focussed on what it means to be a ‘thinker.’ We are exploring materials using our senses, working on being creative, and solving problems.  Mr. C, our Technology & Innovation Coach, has been helping us to learn new techniques for construction and we have been busy making different creations in our classroom maker space.

This week Ms. Loan joined us again. Ms. Loan is a teacher at a local pre-school in Hanoi called 20/10 and is one of 12 teachers paired with UNIS ECC teachers this year.  We are working together to learn more about quality education and exploring ways to make some changes in local schools.  Ms. Loan and I paired up students in her class with K1A students, and today the children drew pictures for their buddies to tell them about UNIS.  We hope to have Ms. Loan’s class visit us later in the year, and for us to visit her school as well.

Show and Tell:

Next week we will choose items from the children’s “treasure bags” for show and tell. Please send in the bag if you haven’t already.  Thank you!

Important – Ms. Charla’s absence:

I had some unexpected news from home and, unfortunately, I need to go to Canada next weekend. This means that I will be absent the week of December 9th-13th. The children will be well taken care of by Ms. Nhung, the rest of the Discovery and K1 Teaching Team, and a supply teacher. Please contact the office with any important information or changes to your child’s routine.  eccsecretary@unishanoi.org  Thank you for your understanding.

Dear Parents,

We enjoyed a visit from many of you on Tuesday’s  ‘Open Classroom Day’.  It was wonderful to have you into K1A to experience learning beside your child.  It was lovely to see you all engaging in our play-based approach.  As you can see, the children are very comfortable with their learning environment, and they enjoy challenging themselves in different ways with the materials and provocations in our space.  As your child posts on his/her SeeSaw account about Open Classrooms, please do take the time to post a response to the questions.  Thank you for your time and support.

This was a big week for K1A as we finally shared our thoughts, learning, and work about children’s rights. Please help our class to further spread their ideas by sharing the assembly video with relatives, talking at home about rights, and letting your child wear his/her special t-shirt.  The shirts were made using special fabric markers and have been heat sealed, so they should be fine to be washed and worn again and again.

After our assembly, the Grade 4 students came down to spend some time with us to learn about our ideas about children’s rights for their new unit of inquiry. It was wonderful to see our K1 children teaching Grade 4s.

Finally – thank you so very much for all of the fabulous Teachers’ Days gifts.  Ms. Nhung and I have never been so spoiled!  We love working with you and especially your children every day.

Dear Parents,

This week we continued our inquiries into ‘Who we are,” and ‘How the world works.’  We have been working on something special to share at the Lower Elementary Assembly on Thursday November 21st.  You are welcome to join us in the theatre at 9:25 am if you’d like (please sit on the sides – the middle section is assigned to the Discovery to Grade 1 classes).  We will not be doing a performance, but sharing some of our learning in photos, videos, and art work.  A copy of our assembly will be shared on SeeSaw.

We have been inquiring into the central idea, “we are thinkers, problem solvers and explorers.” We have a new science lab in our classroom and have been working on creating a maker space. We are working on being creative and investigating materials and ideas together.

Dear Parents,

Here are some important notes:

New Unit of Inquiry:

As we move into our new unit of inquiry ‘How the world works’ we will be creating a K1A Maker Space.  “A ‘Makerspace’ is a metaphor for a unique learning environment that encourages tinkering, play and open-ended exploration for all,” Laura Fleming, author of Worlds of Making.  Please send in any clean materials that would be useful for the children to build with.  Examples include yoghurt pots, tubes, cereal boxes….  It would also be useful for the children to have old keyboards, broken calculators or other bits of technology that you no longer require that do not hold electricity.

The children will be bringing home “found treasure bags” to fill and return to class.  Please see the note that comes with the bag for further information.

K1A at Assembly:

K1A will share our learning at an assembly on Thursday November 21st at 9:25am in the Centre for the Arts auditorium.  Parents are welcome to attend.

November 1

Dear Parents,

This week we continued our inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme ‘Who we are,‘ with the central idea: ‘We know we belong and have a sense of connection to others and the environment.‘ The children shared their country flags and their connections to their home countries.  We worked on designing our own, unique flags that represent who we are and our connections to each other in Discovery and K1.

This week we started Show and Tell.  The children did a wonderful job sharing their items from home with each other.  This was a favourite time of day for most students.  Please see details about next week’s Show and Tell below.

In math we are exploring numerals and practicing finger patterns – different ways to use our fingers to represent numbers.

On Thursday we enjoyed our dress up day.  We also attended a school spirit assembly to welcome visiting High School basketball teams.

Please note that I will be away from school Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week. I will be in Singapore helping a new school work towards becoming an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) school.  This is something that I do as an IB Consultant – a role that I hold with the IB, as well as teacher trainer and school evaluator.  Please contact Ms. Nhung and/or the ECC office if you have any important information to communicate, such as changes in pick up.
