Oct 25

Dear Parents,

This week we continued our inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme ‘Who we are,‘ with the central idea: ‘We know we belong and have a sense of connection to others and the environment.‘ The children continued to explore the colours and symbols of the SDGs as well as flags from our home countries.  We started to learn and share ideas about the rights of children around the world.  What do you think all children in the world SHOULD have?  Please help at home by talking to your child about the meaning of “rights and responsibilities” in your home language/s.

On Thursday we had a Lower Elementary School Assembly. We watched K2A & K2B share their learning about identity.

In math we are beginning to learn about the days of the week, and exploring how to make numbers in different ways.

Thank you for helping us celebrate UN Day at UNIS.  It was wonderful to see all of our families eating together at the community lunch.

Show and Tell starts next week.  Please see the details below about how Show & Tell works in K1.

October 18

Dear Parents,

This was an important week for UNIS as we focussed on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for SDG Week.  On Tuesday all of the children in Discovery and K1 visited all of the D/K1 classrooms to learn about different SDGs – Quality Education, Gender Equality, Life Below Water, and Responsible Consumption.  We investigated the colours and symbols of all 17 SDGs and shared our thinking about what the symbols might mean. We also read a series of books related to the SDGs, and shared ideas about how we can work together to make our world a better place.  We continued to work together to create our class Essential Agreements.  The students have finished drawing and writing about their ideas and our agreements are displayed in the class.  The agreements will be shared on the students’ SeeSaw accounts.

Please see important information about UN Day Celebrations on Monday below, as well as in the school’s Tin Tuc entries.

K1A will have a final swimming session next Friday.  After October 25th we return to our regular PE sessions.

October 4

Dear Parents,

This week we continued our inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme ‘Who we are,‘ with the central idea: ‘We know we belong and have a sense of connection to others and the environment.‘ The children continued inquiring into different family structures and have been particularly interested in families that have 2 mothers.  The children have also been building houses in the block and Lego areas and adding in their family photos. An important part of this unit of inquiry is working together to create our class Essential Agreements.  The students have been proposing and refining their ideas about what we “need” to have a great year in K1 since the first week of school.  This week they have been writing and drawing about our ideas to refer to in the classroom.

On Thursday we had a Lower Elementary School Assembly. We watched the Grade 3s perform dances from their PE unit and practiced the song that everyone will sing together at the UN Day Assembly on Monday October 21st.

On Friday Ms. Charla’s parents from Canada read a story to the class. They brought a special treat from Canada for all of the students – a small candy made of 100% pure maple syrup.  Please check your child’s bag for this small treat.

When we return from the break we will kick of “SDG Week” as a school. This week will highlight the work we do at UNIS Hanoi to make the world a better place by working towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.  Please help your child by sending in “Nude Food” this week – food that is not in single use wrapping.  How does your family work towards establishing sustainable development on this planet?

Swimming continues after the break.  The children have been having a wonderful time in the pool.

Show and Tell will start in the last week of October.  Stay tuned for details! In the meantime, please support our inquiry by sending the following:

  • photos from around Vietnam if you are staying in Vietnam this October Break
  • Maps that we can keep
  • a photo of your child/family in cultural/national dress

Please see this link for photos from this week: K1A Media Folder

Have a wonderful week with your families!
