In PE the students have been designing their Fitness projects based on our current Unit of Inquiry.
Over the past weeks, the students participated in 18 activities to assess their level of fitness in different components:
Muscular Endurance –The ability of a muscle to repeat a movement many times, or to hold a particular position for an extended period of time.
Cardiovascular Endurance- The ability of the heart, lungs and vascular system to deliver oxygen-rich blood to working muscles during sustained physical activity.
Speed- The ability to move your body, or body part quickly
Muscular Strength- The amount of force a muscle or muscle group can exert against a heavy resistance.
Flexibility- The degree to which an individual muscle will lengthen.
Reaction Time-How quickly your brain can respond to a stimulus and initiate a response.
Coordination-The ability to use your body parts and senses together to produce smooth, efficient movements.
Agility- Ability to change your direction and the speed at which you’re traveling quickly and efficiently.
They then unpacked the Central Idea to see if they could match the station to the component of fitness. The students completed the circuit again with their new knowledge about the focus of the stations. The next step was to begin Fitness testing for the 9 components of fitness and to record their results.
The PE Project requires the students to choose a sport and identify the three components of fitness that they are going to focus on during the training phase. This was recorded in their Google Drive document.
The students designed their first training session using the guidelines below:
Each training session must have:
4-8 exercises (each session must include an exercise focusing on each of your CHIEF exercises) The information below is a guide to writing your sessions. They can change depending on the exercise you choose.
Cardiovascular Endurance- Time/Distance – must be longer than 6 minutes or 2KM
Muscular Endurance- Sets/Reps: 3-5 sets, 15-20 reps
Muscular Strength- Sets/Reps: 2-3 sets, 8-10 reps
Flexibility- Time/Distance: Hold each stretch/pose for 20-30 seconds
Speed- Sets & Time: 3-5 sets and Time each set.
Balance- Sets/Reps: 3-5 sets, 10-20 reps
Agility –Sets & Time: 3-5 sets and Time each set.
Coordination-Sets / Time: 3-5 sets or 5-10 minutes of practicing a skill
Reaction Time-Sets / Time: 3-5 sets or 5-10 minutes of practicing a skill
The PE teachers created a great resource to help the students plan their fitness sessions.
Ask your child to show you ideas of exercises that have been helping him/her design his/her sessions.
Next week is time for our next open house! Unfortunately, the homerooms will not be available on Thursday because grade 4 teachers will be at an in-school training.
