28th September

Firstly, I want to say a big THANK YOU to Carmen Kuebler ( Basti’s Mum), for raising her hand to be our K2C class parent! I assume you have seen the email she sent on Wednesday, inviting K2 families to a K2 social event :

Sunday, September 30th –

  • K2 Social!  Moose and Roo Smokehouse, 3-5pm.
  • (21 Hai Bà Trưng, Hàng Bài, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội)
  • Any questions? Please email: kuebler@gmx.com

Happy Global Goals week! I wonder what does your child understand about the Sustainable Development Goals? ( Known as the SDG’s)

  • At home, you might like to talk more about concepts we have introduced this week in K2, such as: making good choices, compost, reducing food waste, reusing both sides of the paper, saving water, caring for the environment and recycling.WE WANT YOUR JUNK– in particular, K2C are collecting used cardboard cylinder and small cardboard boxes. We will turn your trash into ‘treasures’ ! ( As well as think about, sort and describe 2-D shapes and 3-Dimensional objects in our environment.)

Looking for Learning : When children are all engaged in play and on task, I take time to look closely at student’s skills: approaches to learning. ( ATL’s)
For example, yesterday when children were working independently on the task of cutting, pasting and matching photos of classmates with the beginning letter sound on their alphabet chart, I was looking closely at the way they can control scissors, hold a pencil, stay focussed on the task and clean up their own mess. I also found out who is knowledgeable about their friends names and the alphabet.

Monday 1st October is Parent Teacher conferences. I look forward to meeting with K2C parents. Together we will share hopes and dreams, and set some goals for your child as we discuss your child’s ATL’s. I wonder which of the above skills do you feel are your child’s strengths? Which do you feel are goals your child to work on in K2 ?

Ms Beth led a fun, informative parent information session this morning on how we teach MATHEMATICS at UNIS and how you can help your child at home to develop a mathematicians mindset. Here’s a link to some wonderful resources.

Here are some photos of K2C enjoy playing math games. Ask your child to tell you how they play them. Starting after October break, I will be inviting K2C parents to join in our Monday Morning Math Games, ( 8:15-8:45 am ) Your child can teach you to grow your Math Mind and learn about number concepts by playing games. What is a structure? During our Unit of Inquiry learning this week we had some ‘hands on fun’ as we started designing and creating ‘structures’. K2C have shown increased perseverence, and willingness to learn from mistakes when building spaghetti towers, rock sculptures and a playground for ducklings!

K2C invite parents to join the audience in an assembly next Thursday 4th October. ( We will be sharing our learning on the big stage, in the Theatre). The ECC Assembly starts at 9:25 am.

Here is a link to a video of some of K2C’s ‘Learning from ducks’, that inspired our assembly item !

Over the next few weeks our D-2 School Counselor, Kris Bezzerides, will begin a series of lessons about Being Body Smart. One of the main goals for these lessons is to provide our children with knowledge and teach protective behaviors in regards to their bodies and their right to be safe.
These lessons are age – appropriate and non-threatening. They are designed to empower students.
A typical series of lessons will include:
  • “My Body Belongs to Me” – being aware of and taking care of my body
  • “Safe Touch”/ “Comfortable and Uncomfortable feelings” – understanding personal boundaries and how to keep yourself safe
We will continue with lessons during the second semester as well.

Please see Ms. Bezzerides (kbezzerides@unishanoi.org)  if you have any questions about these lessons or how to talk with your children about this topic at home.

14th September

K2C have been thinking about ways to stay happy, safe and healthy at school. The ‘No David‘ books by David Shannon were very inspiring and we all agreed to not behave like David!Yesterday we went to the Grade 4C and 4D classrooms and the ES playground. (Hopefully you would have already seen/heard your child describe his/her buddy on SeeSaw.)  Buddy time happens every 2nd Thursday morning.

Did you know K2C and K2D are researchers! They were able to survey each other. Ask your child to tell you more. Can he/she remember the ‘Do you like?’ question and what we found out?

Units of Inquiry

Who We Are This unit is a year long unit.  A big thank you to all who came to help us begin to connect and develop our international community. Here’s a video of  K2C Family Show and Tell ( Created by Ms Mi).

Next week we will start thinking about our next unit : Where We Are In Place and Time.

Central Idea: The design of structures is influenced by environmental factors, resources, and purpose.

If you happen to be an architect or an engineer and would like to come and help K2 understand the ‘big ideas’ , please let me know.

K2 are also learning to describe characters and objects from different perspectives. ( Teachers are listening very carefully to students Oral language, finding out who can speak clearly in complete sentences, who can answer questions and who can use number words, size words, colour words, shape words, feelings to describe objects and people. )

Your children are also learning to listen carefully to other people and to retell stories.  Can your child tell you the tale of the Enormous Turnip and The Dot ? Did you know tomorrow is international Dot Day.

Do you know what a rekenrek is? Ask your child! Click here to see K2C engaged in counting beads, problem solving, recording their thinking and making their own rekenrek on ‘Math Minds Monday.

Here is a snapshot of ‘Talking Tuesday in K2C’

7 September

Thank you to the parents who attended Back To School night. Here’s a link to the slideshow presentation.

K2C still needs to find a class parent. Click here to see the role of a class parent and if you are interested, please let me know.

Thank you too, for the great support with Family Show and Tell and the baby photos on Padlet

When is your birthday?

This week K2C have been working on a retrieval chart to help us find similarities and differences between classmates.

Your children are also learning how to collect data by asking and answering yes/no questions.

Click here to see a video of your ‘researchers’ in action!

One goal for children is to learn how to form letters correctly when writing their name. (Can your child explain how they are using the sky line, the plane line, grass line and the worm line?)
