Library Saturday Opening – Find out more…

Hello UNIS Hanoi parents –

The SCO and the UNIS Hanoi librarians, Monica and Deborah, are pleased to announce the opening of the main library on Saturday mornings from 9:00am – 12:00pm. There has been great interest from all sectors of the UNIS Hanoi community to have a library that is accessible at times when families are on campus for weekend activities. The hard work of many people in our community has enabled this vision to become a reality and we’re very excited to finally be getting it off the ground.
Mark your calendars for our opening date on SATURDAY, APRIL 13!
In this initial phase, the library will be staffed by one UNIS staff and with the help of 1-2  parent volunteers. Sign up is now open for parent volunteers here. Sign up is for one-hour slots, but signing up for more than one hour is very much encouraged.
All parent volunteers will undergo a training with our wonderful librarians. The first training is scheduled to take place on Monday, April 8 at 9:00am in the library. If you cannot make the training, please contact ES librarian, Monica Mayer, to arrange a suitable time.
Even if you don’t have an exact date, but are interested in volunteering at some point, please plan to join the training. To get an idea of the number of parents who will attend the training, please RSVP here.
Thank you for supporting the UNIS Saturday library!

Our Alumni

Anh Nguyen (Class of 2011) participated in a clean up activity last Sunday in Ho Chi Minh City with a group of friends. He wrote in to share:

Fun? Yes
Tiring? Yes
Disgusting? YES
Sustainable? NoI did a clean up today with an amazing group of people who wanted to do something good. Even strangers joined us after seeing our effort to make a change, no matter how small that change was. We met a person who was cleaning up before us, saying that he couldn’t imagine doing it himself. With the amount of trash in Vietnam, I don’t think any one person can do it themselves, but if we get together and do this as a fun activity, we can all enjoy a cleaner environment.
It starts with small steps. The #trashtag challenge has been started by an online trend, and it is the only online challenge I have done, because I really believe it does good, and hope that it doesn’t stop until Vietnam can be the cleanest country in the world #vietnamvodich.
Littering is a big problem, and cleaning up like this is not a sustainable way, it is akin to treating the symptoms and not the cause. Cleanups like this only make a difference, when the littering stops. While we were cleaning up, there were already people throwing trash right next to us. The solution to the problem of littering is to overcome the inconvenience of cleaning up for yourself. When you throw plastic on the street, know that it will stay there and your children will be living on trash in the future.
I want Vietnam to be clean for one simple reason. I love this country, it’s beauty and charm. So I challenge you, dear reader, to get friends together and do a few sessions of clean ups. And tell your neighbor to not throw that piece of trash on the ground.”

Linh Lan Dover Arthur (Class of 2002) and family is coming back to Hanoi this April to deliver the funds raised at her wedding in support Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation.
As part of her wedding celebration on 16 March in Sydney, Australia, instead of gifts or money, Linh Lan and her husband Ben set up a personal fundraiser on a crowd raising platform and asked the guests to donate to Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation, hoping to raise AUD 1,603 to mark the date.

The couple proudly shared that AUD 7,000 was raised as a result, “We are very happy that this money will go to helping street kids, and those affected by trafficking, AIDS and disabilities as well as help put those in need through school and rehabilitation.” Linh Lan and Ben and their children are living in Australia. They plan to be back in Hanoi this Spring for a small celebration with friends and family in Hanoi and to deliver the funds to Blue Dragon.

AQI and Spring Fair

We hope that the AQI improves as we head into the weekend, but please note that our wonderful community event will be happening and we hope you will plan to join us and Love Our World!

It is the choice of our community to participate if AQI is at high levels and we share with you our two AQI machine data feeds below so you can make that choice.

Please be responsible for checking the AQI and managing your family’s participation accordingly. Please note the health advisory data is only linked to the ‘Roof data feed’ or you can save our Health Advisory document for reference.

There will be posters on site with a QR code linking to the AQI machine providing GROUND DATA readings. Please note: AQI levels fall and rise throughout the day and workers and volunteers who will be outside for long periods of time will be provided with masks (with 2.5mm particle protection) with collection from the UNIS Hanoi Shop Booth.

Thank you for your support as we all learn to live and thrive with the reality of AQI issues.

Canteen Update

Dear Parents,

You may have seen news reports of the outbreak of African swine fever in Vietnam.
While there is no potential harm to humans, the issue currently faced in Hanoi, surrounding provinces and across Vietnam is supply and demand of pork due to containment procedures, culling and bans on distribution issued by agriculture and health authorities to local farms.

Our supplier informed us last Friday that they will not be able to supply us during this week, but we were able to source an alternative supplier that is providing us with certified imported pork only.

Food safety is of paramount importance to Epicure and in turn for our clients and school communities, therefore I want to assure you that Epicure only source product from suppliers that meet food safety certification, standards and health requirements.

We are in constant contact with our suppliers for daily updates and should there be any necessary changes to menus due to supply issues, I will notify the schools’ administration ASAP.

I had discussed a contingency plan for this week’s menu with our UNIS Hanoi kitchen team and will continue to monitor and plan ahead should the need arise to change menus.

Yours sincerely,

Andy Bird
Managing Director
