Starring….”The Grade 1 Gymnasts!”

The Grade 1 classes have been busy practicing the shapes, jumps, rolls, and balances they learnt during their floor routine unit, but this time onto different gymnastics apparatus. They put together incredible routines on the balance beam, bar, rings, vault and mini-trampoline, with a massive focus on having a tight body and control. Here is a sneak peak of what’s been happening behind the scenes! Make sure to check out your child’s Easyblog to see the full routines they created and performed.

Guess What ECC…. It’s SWIMMING TIME!

Starting on Monday May 14th  all students in Discovery, K1, K2, and Grade 1 will be swimming during their PE lessons. Swimming will continue until the end of the school year.

Our swimming program is overseen by our new aquatics coordinator Mr. Hamilton. He brings with him an amazing swim system that focuses on skill progressions and water confidence, while maintaining a safe and fun environment. You can read more details on the program here.

Please make sure your child(ren) is ready to swim by sending to school:

  • swimming costume (not bikinis, swim-suits with hoods, rash vests- see this blog post on why rash vests hinder rather than help: Rash Vests
  • goggles
  • swim cap (if hair is below shoulders)
  • towel
For more details on Swimming Expectations please read the Aquatics blog.

If there are any special requirements for, or exclusions from, swimming over the next 5 weeks please inform Martin Hamilton as well as your PE teacher.

Happy New Year and Welcome Back!

Happy New Year and Welcome Back! We hope everyone had a wonderful December break wherever in the world you travelled. We hope your holiday was fun, full of laughter and exercise!

We would like to take this time to remind you of PE Uniforms. Below is a list of what your child needs to wear/bring to school on PE days.

PE Uniforms in Discovery, K1, K2 is:
UNIS PE shirt/ UNIS House Team Shirt
Shorts or pants (please do not send your child to school in a dress or skirt on PE days)
Reusable water bottle

All students in Discovery, K1, K2 participate in PE in their bare feet. They need to be able to remove their socks as well as their shoes. Please do not send your child to school wearing footed leggings or tights on PE days as this is a large safety concern.

PE Uniforms in Grades 1-5 is:
UNIS PE shirt/ UNIS House Team Shirt
UNIS PE shorts or pants
Reusable water bottle

All students in Grades 1- 5 need to wear appropriate footwear for PE. This means students should come to school in trainers/sneakers. As well we ask that you do not send your child to school wearing footed leggings or tights on PE days as there may be occasions we ask them to remove their socks and shoes.

We understand that the colder weather is upon us and students need to wear pants, sweaters and jackets. We simply ask that you layer your child’s PE Uniform underneath their warmer clothes. This allows them to remove clothing as they get hot in PE.

If you have any further concerns or questions please feel free to talk to your child(ren)’s PE teacher.

G1 Gymnastic floor routine

After several weeks of practicing individual, partner, group and class balances and then linking them with rolls, jumps and creative movements, the Grade 1’s have put together some fantastic performances, full of tight bodies and strong control.

Here are some shots of parents in action too. Way to role-model strength and balance!

Skating update

After such a successful skateboard unit for G2, we are looking to introduce it into G4 and also encourage all students to give a it a go outside of school.

We have partnered with Hanoi’s original skate shop who will be stocking more and more junior boards and gear, including padding. Their quality is the important factor, particularly when safety is a concern.

Linh of LB’s Skateshop has been skating in Hanoi for years and is more than happy to offer help and guidance.

They shoot, they score!!!

The Grade 5’s have just started a new unit looking at the different attacking and defending strategies in Hockey. As the students explore different strategies they create they get to also practice their hockey skills in order to compete in “The great Hockey Hustle” tournament at the end of the unit. Here are some pictures of our first lesson.

UNIS House Phoenix Points

This year in Elementary PE we are trying out a new house points system. Students can earn Phoenix Points for their house when they demonstrate outstanding perseverance, respect, teamwork, sportsmanship, and organization in PE.

To start the competition we have focused on being organized for PE. This means students come to PE wearing their uniform and with a water bottle. If an entire house was able to do this, they won a point.

It’s been a tight competition so far. The standings as of Thursday were:
Buffalos- 18
Lions- 16
Eagles- 16
Tigers- 13

A huge shout out goes out to G1 this week who were the most organized grade level! They have shown how principled and organized they are. Students remembered to bring their water bottle and wear their PE uniform to classes this week. Way to to go G1!
