G2, 3, 4 & 5 swimming AND a sneak preview into our next units…..

Grades 2-5 have had a successful 5 weeks of swimming. Check out the ES Swimming Blog for an update on the program and what they have been learning, practicing and refining over the course of the unit.

Coming up next week…

Grade 2 & Grade 4 will begin their Trampolining unit. What we ask students to be ready for this is: socks, long sleeved top and tracksuit pants/tights. Olympic trampolines have an abrasive surface so your child will get injured without this clothing. Please put them in a bag and leave them at school for the next 5 weeks. Your child will change into them before and after PE.

Grade 3 – Trick Shot. Central Idea: With persistence and practice we can become an expert at something. Watch this space for some Grade 3 Dude Perfects in the making!

Grade 5 – Parkour. We can travel efficiently from one point to another using creativity and a variety of different movements.

Grade 2/3 Adventure Challengers

The grade 2 and 3’s have recently finished their epic adventures in team-building and problem solving.

G2 managed to navigate their way around the ‘Island of the Monkey King’, working on their teamwork skills to negotiate all of the challenges. They successfully discovered and transported the skull of the monkey king and now have the ability to eat as many bananas as they want. They can also listen to each others ideas

G3 used their problem-solving skills to infiltrate a robot gang’s Bomb Factory and work their way up each level. They needed to utilize their problem-solving loop by Identifying the problem, creating ideas, choosing and experimenting with the ideas and then establish whether there were any new problems that arose. Of course, there were always new problems but they tackled each one with vigour and managed to save Hanoi from the gang, you can all feel safer tonight from their efforts.

Right now G2/3 are doing different versions of small ball games. Ask them about them and throw some balls around outside of school to practice everyones hand-eye coordination.

Happy New Year and Welcome Back!

Happy New Year and Welcome Back! We hope everyone had a wonderful December break wherever in the world you travelled. We hope your holiday was fun, full of laughter and exercise!

We would like to take this time to remind you of PE Uniforms. Below is a list of what your child needs to wear/bring to school on PE days.

PE Uniforms in Discovery, K1, K2 is:
UNIS PE shirt/ UNIS House Team Shirt
Shorts or pants (please do not send your child to school in a dress or skirt on PE days)
Reusable water bottle

All students in Discovery, K1, K2 participate in PE in their bare feet. They need to be able to remove their socks as well as their shoes. Please do not send your child to school wearing footed leggings or tights on PE days as this is a large safety concern.

PE Uniforms in Grades 1-5 is:
UNIS PE shirt/ UNIS House Team Shirt
UNIS PE shorts or pants
Reusable water bottle

All students in Grades 1- 5 need to wear appropriate footwear for PE. This means students should come to school in trainers/sneakers. As well we ask that you do not send your child to school wearing footed leggings or tights on PE days as there may be occasions we ask them to remove their socks and shoes.

We understand that the colder weather is upon us and students need to wear pants, sweaters and jackets. We simply ask that you layer your child’s PE Uniform underneath their warmer clothes. This allows them to remove clothing as they get hot in PE.

If you have any further concerns or questions please feel free to talk to your child(ren)’s PE teacher.

Skating update

After such a successful skateboard unit for G2, we are looking to introduce it into G4 and also encourage all students to give a it a go outside of school.

We have partnered with Hanoi’s original skate shop who will be stocking more and more junior boards and gear, including padding. Their quality is the important factor, particularly when safety is a concern.

Linh of LB’s Skateshop has been skating in Hanoi for years and is more than happy to offer help and guidance.

G3 Decision-Making in Invasion Games

We have been learning how to make the right decision at the right time in an invasion game. The students started off playing ultimate ball working on their passing and catching. They then progressed to matball where they were concentrating on moving into space and then things got even, when they needed to be more accurate in the game of benchball. Ask them about the difference between the games.

Next week we will increase complexity by moving to handball where there will be more decisions to make and students will need to speed up their processing. Finally, we will be working on basketball to put all of the invasion games skills and decisions to the test.

G3 Gymnastic performances

All of the hard work that G3 have been putting into their gymnastic movement sequences was finally made into action last Friday when they performed to a number of parents. Their movements all showed strength, control and balance and proved that they had been serious collaborators to create and master their routines.

Even some of the parents got in on the action

New Athletics Unit in PE-What Students Need To Be Ready!

We are starting our new Athletics Unit in PE this week and we will be outside.  In order to keep the students safe, it is important that all students are prepared for class.  Please be sure that your child has their PE uniform, water bottle, hat and proper running shoes. Please no sandals, flip flops or crocs. Grades 4 and 5 will also need to have a change of clothes.  It is also a good idea for the students to put sunscreen on in the morning.

G3 Gymnastics performance

G3 have been creating a gymnastics floor routine during their movement composition unit.  Each student has learned different individual and partner balances, rolls and how to transition to make their movements exciting for an audience.  The students are now in small groups working together to create an quality routine that has strength, control and balance and then perform it to you!
We would like to invite you all to come and be part of our audience, watching your child and his/her group perform their sequence.  If you are available during these times we would love your support.
