Important Music Concert Information for Grades 2 and 3

Dear Parents of Grades 2 and 3,

The Grade 2 and 3 Music Concert will be held on Thursday, March 22nd at 9 am. The students are excited to share with their parents and the UNIS community some of the wonderful music that they have been creating in their classes.

On the morning of the concert, please take your child to their homeroom class as normal wearing their concert clothes (please bring a change of clothes for after the concert). Following student drop off, parents may proceed to the Center for the Arts foyer where tea and coffee will be provided. Doors will open for seating in the theater at 8.50 am.

Concert Attire:

Students should wear black pants or skirt and a white shirt. Here are some ideas:

  • Formal black dress pants or below-the-knee skirt
  • Formal white shirt (this should be a blouse or button up collared shirt, no T-shirts please)
  • Formal black shoes (no sneakers please)
  • ‘A touch of color’ (optional) – for example, a blue scarf, red tie, green belt

Dress Rehearsal

We will be have a full Dress Rehearsal on Wednesday, March 21st. We request that your child comes to school wearing their concert clothes and brings a change of clothes to change into following the dress rehearsal. Concert clothes will be sent back home on Wednesday and should be worn to school again on Thursday, March 22nd for the Parent Concert.

Concert Duration:  9.00 -10.15 am

Concert Attire for Grade 5 Students:

This year the Grade 5 students have two options for their final Elementary School concert.

Option 1 – Formal Wear

Wearing formal wear at the concert provides an opportunity for Grade 5 students to both express themselves and celebrate their musical achievements in their final year of elementary school. Examples of appropriate formal wear include what your child would wear to a wedding, graduation or special occasion (suits, dresses, dress pants/dress shirt). There are no color limitations, however girls’ dresses or skirts should be at least knee length or below the knee.  Please remember formal shoes are required (no sneakers).

Option 2 – Black and White

Amazing Arts Auction

You are invited to the second annual UNIS Amazing Arts Auction!  Join us for drinks, canapes, service learning craft booths, an orchestra performance, and the beginning of our 7 days of bidding on amazing art pieces made by UNIS students, staff, and community members.

When: Opening night is February 6th (Tuesday) / the auction closes on February 13th

Time: 6:00 PM Orchestra Performance / 6:30-7:30 PM Art Auction

Where: The Center of the Arts on UNIS Campus

Why: To raise money for various service learning projects at UNIS with a focus on Operation Healthy Heart which assists children in Vietnam who need heart surgery.

Visual Arts: Grade 5

All of the students in grade 5 have completed their migration still life drawing unit.  Sometimes we send the artwork home right away, and sometimes we keep the artwork in order to display it at the elementary art show.  If we are keeping your child’s still life drawing for the art show, it will be sent home after the art show is done at the end of April 2018.

Visual Arts: Classes 2A & 2C

The students in classes 2A & 2C have completed their Starry Night unit with Ms. Andrea.  Sometimes we send the artwork home right away, and sometimes we keep the artwork in order to display it at the elementary art show.  If we are keeping your child’s painting for the art show, it will be sent home after the art show is done at the end of April 2018.

Local Art Contest!

The Cultural Center of Hanoi is organizing a local art contest with the theme “Peace in the Eyes of Children”.  This contest is available for all children in Hanoi from ages 5-15.

Start Time/Date: 8:30 AM, on December 10, 2017 (Sunday)
Venue: Bat Giac Flower Garden – at the back of Ly Thai To Monument, Dinh Tien Hoang street, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi

Program for the contest:

  • 8:30-8:45 AM: Welcome show, declaration of reason, introduction of delegates, opening speech, and speech by Chief of the Examiners
  • 8:45-10:15 AM: Children create their artwork
  • 10:15-10:30 AM: Collecting the finished artwork
  • 10:30-11:00 AM: Performance while everyone waits for examiners to review the artwork
  • 11:00-11:30 AM: Announcement of the contest, awards, and closing

Children who wish to participate will need to be accompanied by their parents to the event, which should be a fun family activity!  Children who are going to participate in the contest should bring their own art materials (if you would like to borrow some art supplies, please contact Ms. Andrea).  Art materials could be crayons, markers, watercolor paint, chalk pastels, etc… The organizing committee will supply a drawing easel, drawing board, and A3 drawing paper.  The children should draw something with the focus on the
following suggested topics:

  • Cherishing the beauty of Hanoi City – The City for peace
  • Show the feelings of humans about safely living in an environment and their surroundings
  • Beliefs on peaceful and friendly nations from all over the world who are against war, poverty, disease,…

Prizes (25 prizes)

  • 1 first prize: Gift + cash + certificate of Organizing Board
  • 2 second prizes: Gift + cash + certificate of Organizing Board
  • 3 third prizes: Gift + cash + certificate of Organizing Board
  • 19 consolidation prizes: Gift + cash + certificate of Organizing Board

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING, PLEASE EMAIL ANDREA HEINZ (ELEMENTARY ART TEACHER) WITH THE INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR CHILD BY NOVEMBER 21ST.  UNIS WILL HAVE TO SUBMIT A REGISTRATION FORM FOR ALL INTERESTED STUDENTS IN THIS EVENT.

All of the students in grade 3 have completed their first unit which was creating a clay name plate.  Sometimes we send the artwork home right away, and sometimes we keep the artwork in order to display it at the elementary art show.  If we are keeping your child’s clay name plate for the art show, it will be sent home after the art show is done at the end of April 2018.

More Group Work in Visual Art!

Students in Ms. Mel’s class (grade 4), Ms. Angela’s class (grade 5), and Ms. Ronke’s class (grade 5) worked on group art challenges this week!  The students worked in teams at their assigned tables and had to use problem solving skills to work through the challenge that was presented by the teacher.  Each team was awarded an art trophy based on their team strengths.  It’s amazing to see the students work together on collaborative artwork! Way to go, artists!

ATTN: Grade 5 Artists

ATTENTION GRADE 5 STUDENTS AND PARENTS!  We will be working on a still life drawing unit in art class, and we need you to bring in an item from home.  This item should have a special meaning to it.  Please bring in one small-medium sized object and Ms. Andrea will store them in a locked drawer for our class.  Do not bring in anything very expensive (or a precious heirloom) like an iPhone or a passport.  Suggested items might be a favorite toy, a keepsake from your home country, an accessory, etc…  All items must be collected by Wednesday, September 20th.  If you have any questions, please email Ms. Andrea at aheinz@unishanoi.org.
