This week we continued our inquiry into the transdisciplinary theme who we are with the central idea: Personal choices affect ourselves and the community. We focussed on the concept of responsibility – what is our responsibility? How can we be responsible? We had an authentic inquiry into responsibility when the students chose not to tidy up at the end of the day on Monday, and returned to school on Tuesday to find a very messy classroom! We used a visible thinking routine, “See, Think, Wonder” to figure out what happened. Some students thought that the teachers made the mess, others thought perhaps a monster or ogre snuck in at night and turned over our room, others blamed Goldilocks. Luckily Ms. Charla had video footage of the end of Monday for the students to review! As we watched the videos we reflected on our K1B community agreements and decided to take responsibility to tidy up the room and get it ready for the day. In class we read several different versions of Goldilocks, which helped the students explore the idea of responsibility. Tuesday was a big day for the school as we celebrated UNIS’ 30th birthday! On Wednesday we had our first snack sale of the year, and met the ECC Counsellor, Ms. Anissa. Thursday was the UN International Day of Peace. In K1 we explored peace by reading stories, watching videos of students reflecting on peace, drawing about what peace looks/feels/sounds like, and working together peacefully in the classroom. What does peace mean to your family? How do you say peace in your mother tongue? Yaara’s parents visited on Thursday to teach the class about the Jewish New Year which takes place this week, and to help us celebrate with apples and honey to wish each other a sweet year to come.
